The truth of something may be so clearly revealed that we believe it to be true, although we cannot fully understand the matter itself. Some examples of this would be electricity, gravity, fear, and love. Can you add others to this list? How does this relate to believing in the truth of the Trinity?

Go ye therefore, and teac all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

- Matthew 28:19

And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art My beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased.

- Luke 3:22

Why is it more "understandable" to have a God that we can not fully understand, than to believe in a god that can be completely comprehended by the human mind?

This teaching of the Bible is a mystery to us. How these three divine Persons are distinct and yet in one essential Being remains a truth which we cannot fully understand nor explain. As human beings, we cannot fully comprehend God's Being.

While we cannot fully understand this mystery, we are called to believe it, for God has revealed this truth in His infallible Word.

The following examples help to illustrate our incapability of fully understanding the Trinity:

One Sunday a minister announced to his congregation that he would explain the Trinity the following Sunday.

As he was walking home later that week, he stopped in surprise. Kneeling by a river, which the minister usually crossed on his way home, was one of his elders. As the minister observed, the man kept scooping water from the river with a spoon, and dumping it into a small hole nearby.

The minister approached him and asked, "What are you doing?"

Emptying the river with a spoon," he answered.

"You can never do that."

"I can succeed in emptying this river as well as you will succeed in being able to explain the Trinity next Sunday, Reverend," the elder replied.

What true comparison was the elder making, and in what important truth was he instructing his minister?
