the music was written for the same purpose as the words, and that his listening habits promoted the rock music industry. Why?

• Several students researched various printed interviews with leading rock singers and groups, articles on past rock singers who had died from drug overdoses and unnatural causes, and reports of crowd misbehavior from several large rock concerts. They were shocked by what they discovered. Why?

Dancing frequently accompanies rock bands' larger concerts, but also their performance for smaller groups.

One form of dancing is mentioned and approved of in Scripture - a person's dancing alone or in a group with others of the same sex to celebrate God's greatness, often after experiencing His remarkable help or deliverance. Biblical examples would include Miriam's dancing with other women after passing through the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20), Jephthah's daughter's dancing after his victory over the Ammonites (Judges 11:34), the Israelite women's dancing after David's victory over Goliath (I Samuel 18:6), and David's dancing before the ark as it entered Jerusalem (II Samuel 6:14).

It is important to observe, however, that each case of approved dancing in Scripture centered upon God, rejoicing in Him and His deeds, and never took place between persons of the opposite sex. The Bible does mention co-ed dancing on two different occasions - the people's dancing around the golden calf (Exodus 32:18-25), and Herodias' daughter's dancing before King Herod and his friends (Matthew 14:6) - both of which produced terrible results.

The motive underlying co-ed dancing is very different from the God-honoring motive of scripturally-approved dancing. The one centers in the goodness of God, and the other, in the excitement of being with the opposite sex. The interest in both slow, couple dancing and fast, jarring, rock music dancing is the same - the physical attraction of the opposite sex. The appeal of one centers more on body contact and the other on body movements, but both emphasize physical attraction.

And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.

And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

- II Samuel 6:14

And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
