Substance abuse applies not only to tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption, it includes all forms of drug abuse as well.

All types of drug misuse are promoted in our society today; many are especially being pushed upon young people. Numerous teens are facing various pressures of drug abuse.

Most abuse of drugs falls into the following four categories; various present-day examples with their nicknames are listed in each group.

1. Stimulants

2. Depressants

- Sedatives

- Narcotics

3. Hallucinogens

- LSD (Acid, Blotter)
- PCP (Angel Dust, Elephant, Hog)
- MDA
- Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms)

4. Cannabis

- Marijuana (Dope, Pot, Weed, Grass, Reefer, Ganja, Joint)
- Hashish
- Hash Oil (Honey Oil)
- THC

  • Stimulants - Drugs which speed up one's normal bodily processes causing one to feel more energetic

  • Depressants - Drugs which slow down one's normal bodily processes causing one to feel more free or calm












  • Hallucinogens - Drugs which cause the mind to hallucinate, to "see" things in one's imagination

  • Cannabis - Drugs which come from the cannabis sativa plant and affect one's emotions and feelings
