The Widow’s Mite
The Widow’s Mite “And [Jesus] said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: for all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.”—Luke 21:3, 4 At the anniversary of the London Missionary Society in 1829,Rev. Dr. Dickson of Edinburgh told the following story: “Once, when I was collecting contributions for the Scottish Missionary Society, I preached in Paisley. The next day, I was met by an old woman who was dressed in a faded, patched dress. She greeted me cheerfully. I asked her who she was and she answered, ‘Sir, I heard you preach yesterday. I wanted to give something for the mission, but I have not had any work for some time. God, however, has provided for me. He knows that I do not like to go to a missionary meeting when I have nothing to give, so I went to some friends and told them that you were requesting donations. One lady had just a half penny, others had several pennies; altogether I have collected nineteen and a half pennies. I am so glad that God heard my prayer and provided this money for me to give to the missionary society.’ “I appreciated those few pennies more than the large gifts received from wealthy people because of the spirit in which it was given. If, then, God has prospered you more than before, I ask you to act in the spirit of the poor woman of Paisley, not only to cheer the hearts of the Christian directors of the missionary society, but to enable them to cheer the hearts of the millions of human beings who, except for your gifts and prayers, may never hear of the way to eternal life.”
