The second covenant is a covenant of grace for all those represented by, and included with, Christ. But for Jesus Christ it was a covenant of works. He had to earn the right to eternal life for His church through perfectly obeying God's law. Christ received eternal life for His people, not as a free gift of grace, but as a reward for His faithful obedience, for His perfect work. Upon the basis of His fully-earned salvation, Christ freely gives the gift of eternal life to His church, as a gift of grace.

Jesus not only had to earn eternal life for His church through perfectly fulfilling God's law (Christ's active obedience), but He had to also willingly suffer and die a three-fold death to pay the full
