![]() The well-known missionary to China, Hudson Taylor, was traveling to London by train. He met a gentleman and spoke with him as they traveled. Before parting, the man gave him a bank note saying, "Accept this as a trifle for your work in China." Glancing at the bank note, Mr. Taylor discovered that it was a note for fifty pounds! "Did you mean to give me a bank note for fifty pounds?" he asked in surprise. "No, I meant it to be five!" the man replied in astonishment. "But God must have meant it to be fifty. I will not take it back." Impressed with that which had taken place, Mr. Taylor reached the London home of the China Inland Mission to find a prayer meeting taking place. A gift was about to be sent for a special purpose to China, and the money collected was short of that which was needed by forty-nine pounds. This special need had drawn these people together to pray. Upon hearing this, Mr. Taylor produced the fifty-pound bank note he had just received; and together, with tears, they humbly rejoiced in God's merciful care. The joy of trusting in God transcends all worldly joys. Why? Why does the true Christian, believing and trusting in a personal God, have a confidence, peace, and joy which the non-believer can never match? |
