The Apostles' Creed reads as follows:

THE APOSTLES' CREED

I. I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:

II. And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord:

III. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary:

IV. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell:

V. The third day He rose again from the dead:

VI. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:

VII. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead:

VIII. I believe in the Holy Ghost:

IX. I believe an holy catholic church: the communion of saints:

X. The forgiveness of sins:

XI. The resurrection of the body:

XII. And the life everlasting. AMEN.


Nicene Creed

The Nicene Creed was written by the first Ecumenical Council, held in Nicea in 325 A.D. At this time, Arius, a presbyter of Alexandria in Egypt, was promoting the view that God consisted of only one Person, God the Father; that Jesus was not truly God. According to Arius, Jesus is the first-begotten and highest creature, but He is a creature - not Creator. He is above all angels and peoples, but He is not God.

The Council of Nicea condemned Arius' teaching as heretical and confirmed the scriptural truth that Christ is "of one essence with the Father." The Council expressed its faith in Jesus Christ in the Nicene Creed, emphasizing the scriptural truths regarding Jesus' divine and human natures.

  • Presbyter - A minister or elder; a member of a consistory (presbytery)

  • Heretical - Containing religious views that are contrary to Scripture
