The mediator must be God for the following four reasons:

The Mediator Must Be God
|

1. To support His human nature in order to bear the full wrath of God against sin. Any mere creature would have collapsed under, and been consumed by, God's anger against sin.
|
|
2. To give an infinite value to His work. No mere creature could ever finish paying the eternal price required for sin, nor could he ever pay the price for millions of sinners. As an eternal and infinite Being, only God could fully pay sin's price in a short time.
|
|
3. To have the power to lay down His life andpower to take it again. No mere creature has the right to enter into death for others, for creatures do not have disposal of their own lives, since they cannot take them up again. Justice will not allow death to reign over the innocent.

4. To apply the righteousness earned to sinners. No mere creature would be able to apply life to others, to place new spiritual life into spiritually dead sinners.

The mediator must also be truly man. He must be human for the following three reasons:

The Mediator Must Be Human

1. To satisfy God's justice. The righteous justice of God required that the same human nature that sinned must pay the penalty for sin. This human nature included both soul and body - for both had sinned.
|
|
2. To be able to suffer and die. To be able to physically suffer and die, one must be human. Neither God nor angels could suffer in both body and soul and die.
|
|
3. To be man's second covenant head, kinsman, redeemer, and high priest. To be the second Adam - placed under the law, a near kinsman, and tempted in all points as we are - He must be human.
